There is a quiet rhythm to the apiary at this time of year. Watching the workers return to the hives with heavy pollen baskets, I am reminded of why I first fell in love with these magnificent creatures over twenty years ago. They don’t operate out of greed or self-interest; every flight, every fanned wing and every cell built is done purely for the greater good of the colony and the landscape they serve.
For decades, we at Buckley’s Bees have operated with that exact same philosophy. Our motivation has never been driven by profit margins, but by a deep, unwavering desire to make a lasting difference, to sustainably reverse the decline of our native honeybee population, to elevate their vital role within our fragile ecosystem and to protect the natural pollination that feeds our countryside.
To truly safeguard the future of the British bee, however, we have to look at the bigger picture. That is why today, we are incredibly proud to announce the soft launch of our newest project: Buy British Bees.
Direct Action for UK Conservation
It is no secret that the UK beekeeping sector has grown increasingly reliant on imported bees from overseas. While it might offer a quick fix for an empty hive, this practice carries hidden risks; from the introduction of exotic pests and diseases to the dilution of the hardy, climate-resilient genetics that our native dark honeybees (Apis mellifera mellifera) have spent millennia perfecting.
We realised that to help the British bee prosper, we needed to make it simpler, safer and entirely transparent for keepers to choose local stock.
Buy British Bees is the direct result of that mission. It isn’t a separate entity, nor is it a corporate pivot; it is the dedicated shop wing of Buckley’s Bees for our domestic beekeepers to buy – you guessed it – British bees! By creating this focused platform, we can ensure a completely secure and transparent space specifically for the supply of:
- Our Quality-Assured Queens: High-quality, open-mated and verified laying queens raised from our established UK maternal lines, perfect for re-queening a defensive colony or backing local heritage.
- Our 5/6 Frame Nucleus Colonies (NUCs): Robust, balanced spring-starts packed with emerging brood, healthy food stores, plenty of worker bees and a mated, laying queen ready to expand into a full hive.
By organising the platform this way, we can focus entirely on putting high-quality, sustainable genetics directly into the hands of beekeepers like you, ensuring every new colony has the best possible start. Raised on British soil, guided by nature
Every single bee offered through the new website is born and bred right here on British soil, starting at our home apiaries in Cheshire and those of our trusted beekeepers.
In keeping with our commitment to scientific integrity and our active roles within the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) and the Bee Improvement and Bee Breeders’ Association (BIBBA), we refuse to compromise on our methods:
- Zero Imports: We have never imported bees or queens, and we never will.
- Open-Mated for Natural Vigour: We let nature take the lead. Our queens fly freely in local drone-saturation zones, ensuring the genetic diversity and robust health needed to withstand the unpredictable British weather.
- Highest Welfare Standards: Every colony is meticulously nurtured in small, controlled batches and health-checked in line with National Bee Unit (NBU) guidance.
The Vision: A Network of Integrity
Because this project is in its infancy, our numbers are strictly dictated by the seasons. We will never force production or rush nature just to meet commercial demand.
Right now, our NUCs will be strictly for local collection to ensure their welfare and we require that they are hosted within a 100-mile radius of our Cheshire apiary. However, our long-term vision for Buy British Bees is much grander. We are actively laying the foundations to build a reliable, quality-assured network of selected, trusted Buckley’s Bees breeders right across the UK. This will eventually allow keepers to source verified, healthy bees that are local to their specific regional climates.
By managing the sale of bees this way, we are not just running a shop, we are creating local engagement, supporting fellow ethical breeders and ensuring we can continue to educate and inspire the next generation of beekeepers.
Join Us for the Journey
We are stepping into this new chapter with a lot of hope for what it means for our environment, our habitats and our native pollinators.
As we roll out this soft launch, we invite you to take a look around the new platform. If you are looking to introduce a gentle, resilient new queen to your apiary or start a fresh colony this season, please consider joining our waitlist. And if our store shows as ‘out of stock’ please take heart – it simply means the bees are working to their natural schedule, just as they always have.
Thank you, as always, for your immense patience, your shared passion and your continued support in helping us support the British bee.
