Happy International Women’s Day! 🐝💛

A message from Emma, our CEO ✨
Today I’m celebrating the incredible women who make the beekeeping community so special. Through Buckley’s Bees, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside so many amazing women, passionate beekeepers, strong business owners and dedicated nature lovers who care deeply about our bees and our environment.

Beekeeping has long been a craft built on patience, resilience, and community and I’m constantly inspired by the knowledge, support and strength that women bring to this space. From sharing advice in the apiary to supporting each other’s small businesses, the women I meet through this work remind me every day how powerful collaboration can be.

Here’s to the women tending hives, protecting pollinators, running businesses and lifting each other up. Your hard work truly makes the world bloom. 🌸🐝

Yesterday the apiaries were buzzing with activity

Yesterday the apiaries were buzzing with activity as we caught our first real glimpse of spring. 🌼🐝 All kinds of bees were out enjoying the sunshine, making the most of the warmer weather.

This Bumblebee was certainly enjoying visiting our Daffodils. Moments like this remind us why we plant with all pollinators in mind, choosing flowers that support all bees and other pollinators throughout the seasons is really important.

Dandelions are now starting to flower, so please allow them too, they are a vital early food source for many insects! 🌼

You don’t always have to lift the roof to know what’s going on inside a hive 🐝

Today Emma is at the back of our @healthsafetyfire colony, checking the varroa floor board insert. The bottom board tells us so much without disturbing the bees.

The board might look dirty but it tells us a lot! From this one board we can see:
• Where the cluster is positioned in the hive
• Wax cappings from emerging brood and food consumption
• Varroa drop (and even signs of hygienic behaviour through chewed out exoskeletons of infested baby bees)
• The colours of pollen coming in
• Evidence of brood rearing and overall colony activity

It’s like reading the hive’s diary - all from underneath.

Careful observation means fewer intrusive inspections and happier, calmer bees. Sometimes the best beekeeping is simply learning how to read the signs they leave behind. 🐝✨
